Stringers Ridge Invasive Species Management Plan

Overview

Detailed mapping of Stringer Ridge's 92 acres revealed that invasive plant species covered more than half of the park. Bush honeysuckle, Japanese honeysuckle, and Chinese privet were stacked along trails, behind homes, and along neighbourhood edges. Invasive species increase ecological degradation and prevent native species from regenerating. Our experts studied the land and built a plan to control the invasive species populations. This involved controlled burning, data-guided zoning, and collaborative restoration to make Stringers Ridge a resilient native plant species hotspot. 

Our team used a systematic transect and plot‐based survey design; 48 transects and 746 plots were sampled across the park. Field data were supplemented with high‐resolution drone imagery and integrated into GIS to produce both static and interactive maps. These spatial products revealed the current extent of plant invasions, their correlation with trails, erosion, hydrology, and former disturbance zones, and their implications for ecological restoration.

The findings demonstrated that invasive pressure at Stringer’s Ridge is closely tied to human access, stormwater patterns, slope instability, and legacy land use. Tierra experts found that fire history appears to reduce invasive dominance, suggesting prescribed burning could serve as both a control and restoration tool in targeted zones.

Erosion and Hydrological Stability

Combined with invasive plant removal was slope stabilization where coir logs, wattles and deep rooting native plants helped improve drainage and stormwater retention. 

Controlled Burning

Controlled burns involve choosing carefully selected areas with certified contractors, followed by the rapid replanting of native plants.

Long-Term Management

Community and volunteer engagement for future invasive removal, seeding and planting and annual check ups with GIS monitoring.
