Shallowford Preserve

    Shallowford Preserve covers ~27 acres of foliage, rocky terrain, and waterways. Our team of expert ecologists conducted a detailed species survey to understand species abundance, diversity, and potential risks such as endangered and invasive species. These extensive surveys help us provide you with detailed reports and GIS mapping, and eventually help our experts assist you with species permitting, mitigation strategies, and habitat management plans to protect your species and your habitat. 

The Shallowford Preserve exhibits a diverse ecosystem with over 220 identified plant species, predominantly native, emphasizing its rich biodiversity and relatively undisturbed nature. However, the presence of invasive species, notably Ligustrum sinense (Chinese Privet), poses ecological challenges, particularly in the shrub layer. Data collected by our team highlighted the distribution of species across herbaceous, shrub, and tree canopy layers, crucial for future conservation strategies.

To sustain the ecological integrity of the Shallowford Preserve, recommendations include the development of a comprehensive management plan focusing on invasive species control and habitat restoration. Proposed strategies, such as controlled burns, targeted herbicide applications, and mechanical removal. These stratagies aimed to suppress invasives effectively while promoting native species recovery and ecosystem health in one of Chattanooga's many valuable ecological assests.
