

Renaissance Sediment Depth Survey
Overview
Renaissance Park is one of the crown jewels of Chattanooga’s Tennessee River Park and was created as part of the “21st Century Waterfront Master Plan” that helped transform the downtown area into what it is today. The point of this survey was to contribute to the ongoing efforts in maintaining and enhancing the ecological health of this highly visible park. The park boasts a rich array of recreational opportunities, including walking trails, picnic areas, and access to the Tennessee River, inviting residents and visitors alike to connect with nature and enjoy outdoor activities.
Renaissance Park provides a crucial ecological role within Chattanooga's urban landscape. Its restoration has fostered the resurgence of native plant species, creating vital habitat for local wildlife and contributing to the overall biodiversity in the region. Findings from the sediment depth survey revealed an average sediment depth of 0.49 meters, indicating substantial accumulation that may impact the wetland's functionality. While the wetland continues to provide essential ecosystem services such as pollutant removal and stormwater management, periodic sediment monitoring and eventual removal were recommended to maintain its efficacy.
Understanding the alterations in the park's sediment depth is crucial for effective management and by analyzing changes in wetland functionality over time, we gained insights into the broader environmental implications and the health of the ecosystem.
